Frequently asked questions
What is plug-in solar?
Plug-in solar is a small-scale solar energy system designed to connect to a suitable household socket. Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity, which is converted into usable alternating current (AC) power by a microinverter. The electricity generated can then be used by appliances in your home, helping to reduce the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid.
What's included in a plug-in solar kit?
Contents vary by model, but a typical kit includes solar panels, a compliant microinverter, mounting equipment, and all required cables and connectors. Always refer to the product listing and installation guide for details of the components supplied.
Can solar panels generate electricity when it's cloudy?
Absolutely! Solar panels continue to produce electricity even on overcast days. As long as there is daylight, your system will still generate power.
While solar panels perform best in direct sunlight, modern high-efficiency technologies such as TOPCon cells can continue generating energy effectively in lower-light conditions.

How much electricity can I generate and how much could I save?
The amount of electricity produced really depends on several factors, including your location, roof or panel orientation, installation angle, shading, weather conditions, and the time of year.
Properties located further south in the UK generally receive more solar energy throughout the year. Financial savings will vary depending on how much electricity you use while it is being generated and the price you pay for grid electricity.
As energy prices rise, the potential value of the electricity generated by your system could also increase.

Will my system generate its maximum output all day?
No, solar output varies throughout the day and across the seasons. Generation levels are influenced by sunlight intensity, weather conditions, temperature, shading, and panel positioning.
Maximum output ratings represent the system's peak capability under ideal conditions and shouldn't be viewed as constant daily production.

What does the 800VA limit mean?
The microinverter is designed to limit AC output to a maximum of 800VA. The solar panels themselves may have a higher combined wattage, helping the system achieve stronger performance in varying weather conditions, but the inverter ensures output remains within this (currently) permitted limit.
Will my system export electricity to the grid?
Your solar power will be used within your home first. If your system is generating more electricity than your household is consuming at that moment, any excess may be exported to the electricity network.
Whether you receive payment for exported electricity depends on your energy supplier, meter type, and any export tariff arrangements you have in place.

Will the system work during a power cut?
No. For safety reasons, the microinverter automatically shuts down if the grid supply fails. This protection helps safeguard engineers working on the electricity network.

Do I need a special electricity meter?
No, but a smart meter might make it easier to monitor electricity imported from and exported to the grid.

Do I need to notify my electricity network operator when I plug-in a solar panel kit?
Yes, although we can handle this step for you. Just choose 'Yes' on the dropdown menu for 'Notify my DNO for me' on the product page and we'll sort it!
Is plug-in solar suitable for every home?
Not necessarily. You need a suitable outdoor location with adequate space, minimal shading, and a safe electrical connection. The installation location must allow the system to be mounted securely and operated safely in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
If you're not sure whether your property is suitable, seek advice from a qualified electrician or relevant professional.

Can plug-in solar be installed on a balcony or in a flat?
It depends on the specific system and installation requirements. Balconies and flats can present extra safety, structural, and permission considerations. Always check the installation instructions and obtain any necessary permissions before proceeding.
Do I need planning permission?
Planning requirements vary depending on the property, location, and installation method. Additional restrictions may apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, flats, balconies, or visible installations.
If you're unsure, contact your local planning authority and obtain any required permissions before installation.

Do I need an electrician?
The systems we sell are designed for self-installation when used as instructed. However, the electrical socket and household wiring must be safe, suitable, and correctly installed.
If you have any concerns about your electrical installation, consult a qualified electrician before use.

Can I use an extension lead, adaptor or multi-plug socket?
Nope! Always connect your plug-in solar system exactly as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. Extension leads, adaptors, multi-way sockets, smart plugs, and similar devices shouldn't be used unless specifically approved.
Can I install more than one plug-in solar kit?
Not at the moment. Current UK guidelines limit the number of kits to one per household. Please note, though, that one kit can contain more than one panel.
What about bad weather?
Always install and use your kit in accordance with the supplied guidance, including any requirements relating to mounting, ballast, wind exposure, and positioning.
After severe weather, inspect the system for any signs of movement or damage and stop using it if you think it may no longer be safe.

How should I clean the panels?
Use gentle cleaning methods and avoid abrasive materials, harsh chemicals, or pressure washers. Where access may be difficult or unsafe, seek assistance from a suitably qualified professional.
What should I do if any part of the system is damaged?
If the cable, plug, inverter, panel, or mounting system appears damaged, stop using the system immediately and follow the manufacturer's safety guidance. Don't attempt to repair electrical components yourself.
How do I monitor my solar generation?
Many plug-in solar systems include app-based monitoring through the supplied microinverter platform. Monitoring features may require an internet or Wi-Fi connection but don't affect the actual generation of electricity.
Can I add a battery?
Only if the battery system is specifically approved for use with your exact plug-in solar system and is permitted under the applicable regulations.
Adding unapproved equipment may affect safety, compliance, and warranty protection.
Adding unapproved equipment may affect safety, compliance, and warranty protection.
How will my kit be delivered?
Delivery arrangements vary depending on the kit and your location. Solar kits are typically large and heavy so please check all packaging and components carefully when they arrive.
What if my kit arrives damaged?
Don't install damaged equipment. If damage is seen or suspected, please take photos of the packaging and affected components, keep all packaging materials, and contact us as soon as possible.
How are cancellations and returns handled?
Returns, cancellations, and refunds are subject to our Terms and your statutory consumer rights. Because plug-in solar kits can be large and heavy, please contact us first before arranging a return.
Where can I get support?
If you require assistance, just reach out to us and provide as much information as possible, including the product model, serial number, purchase details, installation date, and photographs where relevant.
